Chuka Historical Texts: A scholarly history, given a cover worthy of its subject.
Client: MDS. Role: Book cover design. Year: 2025.
The cover for Chuka Historical Texts, a databank of multi-disciplinary studies on the Chuka people’s origins, movements, settlements and cultural life, a follow-up to 1974’s Embu Historical Texts.
Challenge: Thirteen chapters of oral-history scholarship, researched and compiled across three universities over decades, needed a cover that read as serious academic work rather than a generic report.
Approach: A deep maroon field, a dignified author portrait, and bold condensed display type for the title, with the subtitle and ISBN set quietly beneath it.
Outcome: A cover that holds its own on an academic shelf while staying legible as a thumbnail online.
